Rampart screenshots Rampart is a strategy game in which you must build your castle and fend off attacks from enemy boats and castles. The game is played out in a number of different phases. At the start of a level you must choose a home castle and when you do a wall will be build around it. Then you have to place cannons inside the walls of your castle but remember to place them in a proper way so that you can add extra canons later. When battle starts you must attack enemy boats in single player mode or attack other castles in multiplayer mode. The boats can move in different directions and speeds so you must time your attacks so that they will hit when the canon rounds finally reach their targets. Hitting others castles is far easier since they are stationary targets and you only have to destroy the walls. In the final phase you can rebuild your castle with blocks you are given to close any gaps in the walls. If you are fast you can build the wall to encompass another nearby castle and you will be given extra cannons. Make sure all your canons are closed in by walls or you will not be able to use them and even worse if not at least one castle is enclosed you will lose immediately.
When you are done you will start the attacking phase again until you destroy all enemies at which point you win or if you are unable to repair your castle you lose.
Laters levels mean you have to take out more ships and things become generally more difficult.
Rampart is great fun to play especially when playing with other human players. The DOS and C64 version have a three-player option whereas the others only have a maximum of two players. It's not easy either you must time your attacks properly or you won't hit the moving ships with your slow moving canon balls. Also when repairing your castle the blocks you get won't always be straight so you have to think fast about how to rotate and place them.
All this combined make for a fast paced puzzle/stategy game that will last for ages especially when joined by a couple of friends.
All versions of the games are great fun but the best has to be the DOS version with good graphics, digitized sound and a three player mode. If you do not no how to play this game, find the Rampart guides here.
